I just received my copy of Applied Behaviour Analysis Second Edition today and have not put it down for several hours. I work as an ABA therapist and I am convinced that this is a learning and reference tool I will use for a long time to come to help me be better at what I do. It is very straight forward and well put together. The references to the Board Certification Task list content are excellent and the new additional chapters on Verbal Behaviour, Ethics, Motivation, Negative Reinforcement and Functional Behaviour Assessment are a real asset and make having the second edition well worth the wait. The textbook really covers a huge amount of information and is well well worth the purchase.
There are a few things about this book that should be said right away. First, this is not really an introductory book to ABA, but works as a book that ties so many theories together. That means that it could be used in conjunction with many starter ABA books, allowing its reader to get a feel of just what ABA means. The book also works on both a Masters and a PhD level when it comes to conceptual decision/ debate (an oddity if I do say so myself), and covers so many things that cheaper guides seem to omit. This could mean bypassing some causal arena or not talking about something as simple as the C.A.R.R., but these tiny slips are really not so tiny when you think about them. There are plenty of great things listed about this book in other reviews, so I'll skip the addition of chapter content and the addition of material and its praise. Instead, I'll add that this is one of the few books that can make or break you when it comes to trying to get licensure. In fact, this book has been listed as one of the top 10 preparation guides to use before testing, and that is some high praise considering how vaunted the test actually is. More than this, however, is the fact that this is a tool that can help you in real life scenarios and, truthfully, that is more important than being able to simply pass tests. In samples as heterogeneous as those seen in autism, you really need to know how to handle multiple scenarios to make a difference. If you are looking for a navigation tool to help with the rocky waters of autism, this is a great book to acquire. It may have a price tag attached, but it proves invaluable in the long run and that matters more than anything. Recommended for the student in all of us.
This text is spectacular. This edition is a triumph. I was a bit dubious when the forward obliquely compared this book to The Beatles (The White Album), but have become more sympathetic to the perspective as I have spent more time with it. Cooper/Heron is simply the book to use in studying Applied Behavior Analysis. It's not chummy or dated like some texts of 70s (an effort to reduce the response effort of learning the material, no doubt). Instead it is complete, precise and well written. My sincere thanks to the authors. Worth twice the going price.
This book is THE book to have if you are planning on a career as an applied behavior analyst, preparing to take the board certification exam in behavior analysis, or are a practicing applied behavior analyst wanting a comprehensive reference book on ABA. It is way too rigorous and way too long, in my opinion, for an introductory course in ABA, especially a one-semester undergraduate course. However, it offers the level of detail that advanced students who plan to work in ABA need. As far as I know, there is nothing that can compete with this book for completeness.
My friends and I joke that we will name our first son Cooper! This is not to discredit Heron and Heward, but Cooper just fits better as a first name. This book is the bible. I must admit, starting out in the field I had to get use to the terminology and to the way the book is written. However, after finishing my third chapter, I read with ease and felt as though I was retaining the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis. Whether you are in an ABA program, a parent who wants to know more or a therapist who need to brush up on your ABA, this is the book for you! My book is highlighted throughout, with notations and post-it's pouring out of the sides. You will go through it over and over again! The chapter reviews are spot on and highlight the necessary information for success in any respectable applied behavior analysis program. I love that they outline the necessary aspects of the BACB requirements at the beginning of each chapter. This has allowed me to organize my studying accordingly for the certification exam. I hear often that the important stuff comes back and is on purpose. The repetition of certain concepts and principles throughout the book has allowed me to create a solid framework from which I pull from in my clinical practicum. Love, love, love my Cooper book!
To many in the Applied Behavior Analysis field this book is known as 'the white book' or 'the ABA Bible' and it holds true to both names. This book is an amazing read! As a graduate student new to the field at first I was a little overwhelmed with classes and practicum. This book put me at ease and explained topics in such ways that anyone can understand. Not only is the book a great resource but the website has chapter summaries, guided, notes, essay question and chapter quizzes. This book was mandatory for many of my courses however I find myself constantly using it for projects and presentations. This book lays out a good break down of Applied Behavior Analysis in a concise manner. A must read for all exceptional education teachers those treating children with Autism and anyone interested in the field. As a commuter, I travel a total of two hours a day, one think that this book is missing is an audio addition! Since I try to maximize my time I would love to turn to a chapter and listen to it again after reading it, for a review. Every time you read you get more knowledgeable than the last time. I would also like to have an app for the ipad or iphone! This way I don't have to carry it around everywhere :)
I had to purchase this book as part of my graduate program for School Psychology! This book was full of great information which continues to be helpful for me now that I am on the field.
The field of applied behavior analysis is rapidly growing and offers valuable help for a range of individuals including those with autism spectrum disorders. The most satisfying part of this field in general and this text in particular is the well thought out approach to understanding and modifying behavior. It is a bit ironic that behavior analysts don't spend a lot of time talking about mental explanations because they can't measure them, their work represents some of the clearest thinking in all of psychology
This book was very informative for my masters program. It had great examples and reading took a little getting used to with all its jargon but eventually got easier to comprehend. Very useful and intend to keep it for future reference.
This is a great textbook for ABA. It is perfect for studying for the Board Certification for Behavior Analysis (BCBA).
The BIBLE/desk reference/go-to book for professionals in behavior modification field...
By Megan E. Sullivanon Mar 14, 2012
To provide a basis for my review, here is a general background to support my rating: I am currently enrolled as a student in the graduate coursework program at Florida Institute of Technology, working towards earning a certification to practice as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. I have worked as a special education teacher and behavior therapist for children and adolescents with autism and multiple disabilities in both public school and private residential settings. I have a graduate degree in special education, emphasis in emotional/behavior disorders. My peers in the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA) call this textbook our 'bible.' The wrinkles (not cracks!-- great job by the publisher, by the way!) in the spine from its frequent use are indicative of the information's efficacy in my own research, study, and current practice as a behavior therapist. All of the information is current, with the most up-to-date research available at the time of publication and historical research that has continued to serve as the foundation of the field of applied behavior analysis. All presented chapters, written by the leading research and behavioral engineers of our field, are neatly presented with appealing text font and text size, in addition to information that is organized in a manner that highlights VERY important terminology that one must be fluent with for future practice, and also provides follow up review points (take-home points) that are easy to read as general summaries. Real world examples are numerous, but the flow of the information within each chapter and sub-heading is what has me so keen on using this book as a reference material for my own practice. Because I believe that behavior analysis should and can be applicable to all areas of human interest with the goal of improving the quality of life for others (and oneself!), I am grateful that this text has helped me to overcome my ignorance of the field of ABA, and has inspired me to generalize my newly acquired knowledge to other fields I've been interested in. That current interest includes organizational behavior management (OBM), and this textbook has sufficient information to support my elective courses and research readings in OBM.

The paperback version of this book is the international version. It is not the same version as Applied Behavior Analysis (2nd Edition) and in my opinion should not be listed on the same page for purchasing. If you are purchasing this book for a class based out of the USA the page numbers will NOT match up and possibly even more differences. It is only $10-20 more for the hardcover edition, save yourself some heartache and spend the money for the correct edition. There is no paperback version of Applied Behavior Analysis (2nd Edition). My 3 stars is for the listing not the book. Book is great.
This book has printed across the cover that it is not to be sold in the US. It is missing chapters form the original text. If you are looking for the 'white Bible of ABA' this is just a copy of parts of it. Wast of money.
Excellent source of info but needs more simplified explanations.

Holy mackerel is some of the verbiage hard to wade through, but the material is excellent. If not for the lectures of my professors that go along with it I'd not be able to grasp this on my own, which is what they are for I suppose. But trying to use the definitions in the back make it more confusing than you would have been already. Those are useless, to me anyway. They need to do a better job of simplifying the material to a level where it's more readable. It's like sorting through a Shakespearean sonnet without the poetry. But an excellent future resource regardless.
Appendix (or something) at beginning instead of end--so there is like a 20 page number difference between hard-cover vs paperbac
By Trenton Sep 07, 2015
Same as the White hard-cover text book, but way more affordable. Difference: Appendix (or something) at beginning instead of end--so there is like a 20 page number difference between hard-cover vs paperback placement (important for completing reading assignments meant to reflect white book).
Got this book for classes, its the same edition as the hardcover, yet for some reason its arranged completely differently than the hard cover. Its also missing the condensed list of concept checks with their coinciding page locations. It's also a bit annoying because you have to flip throughout the entire book to complete a concept check. If your getting this for self study, you'll be fine. But if your purchasing this book for a class that relies heavily on the use of the book, then you might be better off buying the hardcover.
This ABA book has so much great information....BUT the print is poor. Like the printer runs out of ink . I am required to have this book for my class and it is a good resource, I just wish the ink was not faded in the text book
Exactly what I need for school, for prepping for my BACB exam, for going back to reference at any time. If you are currently on track to the being a BCBA or BCaBA this book is your lifeline. I know this is one book I will be keeping in my professional library from now until forever. If you're new to the field you will soon find out why this book is your new best friend. Make sure you get this book and keep loving it as you move through your courses. You may only need it for one or two classes, but it is a huge asset as you prepare to sit for your exam
BEWARE: If you are buying this book used, there are some out there that are just cheap illegal photocopies of the original. You won't know it just by glancing at the book cover, but if you compare it to an original authorized copy, you can truly see (and smell!) the difference. The photocopied version smells of toxic ink (very difficult to read and study the content with the awful smell), the paper is thinner, and the graphics are obviously photocopied. See pictures for comparison. I suggest contacting the seller first to make sure the version that they are selling is a legal authorized copy--a few sellers of used copies that I have asked here mysteriously sold theirs and removed their listing (or resubmitted their listing under a new seller name) after receiving my email inquiring as to the legitimacy of their copy.
I'm very disappointed. I didn't notice before, but as I was reading through the book and as I was doing my course for graduate school I noticed pages were missing! I can't have pages missing, that mean, I get a poor grade on my exam, because I could not have all the info for my course. Not worth 70 dollars, I would never have bought if I new. Plus pages were upside down in some areas in the book and so light, I could barely see.
Oh the Cooper book, aka the behavior bible. I love this book, it could be due to the fact the person who introduced it to me also has a profound love and respect for it too. For anyone in the world of ABA, it is a one stop shop. After one semester the binding started to go which isn't ideal but I see it as battle scars and I'm honored!

By Regina S.on Jan 19, 2016
This book is exactly the same as the US edition content wise. I compared the 2. There are no missing chapters. The differences are the cover picture, it is not printed on glossy paper, the glossary is in the front of the book, there is no preface or forward and there is no condensed list of the BA Task List with where to find each concept in the book (each is outlined in the beginning of each chapter). Saved me a lot of money!
I am an adjunct professor for two graduate ABA programs and this is a required and essential text in both programs. This is the definitive ABA textbook for all future and currently practicing behavior analysts.

By Tisha Meltonon Apr 17, 2015
I am not sure what was wrong with this book. It smears easily when you touch the pages if you have ANY moisture or lotion on your hands. A few of the pages have very light ink. The pages are rather thin and slick. I would have returned it but I had already started taking notes in it when I noticed the problems. It appeared to be new, in shrink wrap. I have heard of some counterfeit textbooks being sold online. Perhaps that is the case with this one.
This book is definitely recommended to anyone going into the field. Most likely, you'll need to purchase this anyway if you're doing a masters degree or some post-graduate degree. It's worth the money though. The book is easy to read and isn't complicated. Even if you don't have a strong background, you can easily follow the material. The book is also well structured and has a good progression and is easy to follow and find what you're looking for. It's great as a reference book as well. Well worth the purchase for anyone going into the field.
The book came quick, and after three weeks in school the front cover came completely off. I noticed glue on the binding of the book, so someone had tried to put it back together before. I intend to return this book as I will need this book forever and it won't last without a cover.
Great savings..same info as hardcover. Just different page numbering.
By Gyon Feb 25, 2016
If you can handle the page numbering being 20 pages different from the hardback version, save your money and grab this! The text is actually identical. It's lacking Chapter Names, a hard cover and the task list, but the information is all there.

The ABAI bible. This will help future BCBAs get ready to pass the big exam. As a graduate with my masters degree and preparing to take my exam, I couldn't have don't any of it without this book.

Very frustrated to find that I purchased the paperback version first only to find they aren't the same.... Should be mentioned in the description
This is the BCBA bible. It's a must have for exam prep.
Whoever is selling this book, the pages are thin and the ink smudges way too easily. So if you are rough with your books, get the book that is built with better quality. This book has all the content...I think. It seems like the content is all in there but there are some key terms that are not bolded or it seems like the content is in it's draft stage. IDK, you get what you pay for for quality.
